Fewer quarts

Less oil in the ground, and less of it burned.

An engine has to be lubricated. The environmental question is how much oil that takes, and how much of it leaves through the tailpipe. That is the case the original 907 Synthetics environmental page made for AMSOIL.

Change it less often

Source reduction is the first step: use less oil in the first place. Conventional practice is a change every 3,000 miles. Signature Series is formulated for up to 25,000 miles or one year in normal gasoline service. A diesel on Max-Duty follows its own limit — up to 60,000 miles or 600 hours on heavy equipment, not a blank check. Fewer drains mean fewer quarts purchased, hauled, and eventually handled as waste oil. Used oil is recyclable. Not generating it is better.

Burn less of what you pour

The original page cited nearly 600 million gallons of motor oil a year burned out the tailpipes of cars and trucks. Petroleum oils volatilize more readily than a low-NOACK synthetic. Oil that evaporates in the crankcase is oil that exits as emissions, and oil you have to top off. AMSOIL synthetics are built to resist that burn-off, which keeps the level up and the exhaust cleaner between changes.

Use less fuel doing the same work

AMSOIL’s published fuel-economy work puts the gain from lower friction in a range of about 2 to 5 percent, depending on the test and the engine. That is not a promise for every truck on the Glenn. It is the reason a slicker oil shows up at the pump as well as on the dipstick. Less fuel burned is less exhaust, on top of the oil you did not change.

The company, not just the bottle

The original page noted AMSOIL’s ISO 14001 environmental-management certification — then registered to the 2004 edition of the standard. ISO 14001 does not set a pollution number. It requires a company to measure its impact and keep reducing it. The current standard is the 2015 revision. The point of the page still holds: a longer drain is an environmental spec, not only a convenience.
