Harley-Davidson / Oil change kits

Which AMSOIL Harley-Davidson oil change kit do you need?

AMSOIL makes four V-Twin oil change kits. The 4-quart kits fit most 1999–2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and the 5-quart kits fit most 2016-to-present models. Black or chrome is the filter finish: black kits carry the EaOM134 filter, chrome kits the EaOM134C. Every kit has AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil, one filter, and a drain-plug O-ring.

What’s in each kit?

Every kit is one box: AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil, one AMSOIL motorcycle oil filter, and one drain-plug O-ring.

Black or chrome: is there a difference?

In AMSOIL’s listings the only difference between the black and chrome kits is the filter finish: EaOM134 is black, EaOM134C is chrome. Oil, quart count, and O-ring match, and AMSOIL lists the same GA251 filter wrench for both. Pick the finish that suits the bike.

Does the kit do a 3-hole oil change?

No. A “3-hole” change means draining all three Harley sumps: engine, primary chaincase, and transmission. The AMSOIL kit covers the engine. AMSOIL says its 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil is engineered for V-twin engines, motorcycle transmissions, and primary chaincases, and delivers the convenience of one lubricant for all three sumps. So for a 3-hole change you have two routes:

  • Add enough extra 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil for the primary and the transmission.
  • Or use AMSOIL’s dedicated V-Twin Primary Fluid in the primary and V-Twin Transmission Fluid in the transmission.

Capacities and any gaskets or O-rings for the primary and transmission are in your service manual and on the AMSOIL motorcycle lookup. Shop 20W-50 V-Twin oil, V-Twin Primary Fluid, or V-Twin Transmission Fluid.

Milwaukee-Eight, Twin Cam, Evolution, or Sportster?

Go by model and year, not engine nickname. AMSOIL lists 2017-and-newer touring bikes and 2018-and-newer Softails under the 5-quart kits, and Sportsters, Dynas, older Softails, and 1999–2016 touring bikes under the 4-quart kits. 2016 and some crossover years show up on both sides, which is exactly what the motorcycle lookup is for.

Changing it: filter wrench and O-ring

  1. Ride the bike long enough to warm the oil, then park it upright the way your manual describes.
  2. Drain the engine oil and replace the drain-plug O-ring with the one in the kit.
  3. Remove the filter (AMSOIL lists the GA251 wrench for both filters), film the new gasket with fresh oil, and install it to the manual’s spec.
  4. Fill with the kit oil, start briefly, and check the level the way your manual describes.
  5. Check for leaks, and recycle the used oil and filter.

Torque values and the exact procedure are in your service manual. Follow it over any general list, including this one.

An Alaska riding season

Up here the riding season is short and the storage season is long. A few habits from riding around the Mat-Su: change the oil before the bike goes away for winter so it sits on clean oil, store it somewhere it won’t cycle through freeze and thaw, and check the level again on the first spring ride. A garage that swings from cold nights to warm afternoons is the kind that makes condensation.

Harley oil change kits, answered

Does the AMSOIL Harley kit include primary and transmission fluid?

No. Each kit covers the engine oil change: AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil, one AMSOIL motorcycle oil filter, and one drain-plug O-ring. For the primary and transmission, buy the extra 20W-50 or the dedicated AMSOIL V-Twin Primary Fluid and V-Twin Transmission Fluid separately.

Which AMSOIL kit fits a 2017-or-newer Milwaukee-Eight?

AMSOIL lists its 5-quart kits for 2017-and-newer touring models (Road King, Street Glide, Road Glide, Ultra Limited, CVO Limited), 2018-and-newer Softails, and 2017-and-newer trikes. Confirm your exact model on the AMSOIL motorcycle lookup.

Can I run 20W-50 in all three holes?

AMSOIL says its 20W-50 Synthetic V-Twin Motorcycle Oil is engineered for V-twin engines, motorcycle transmissions, and primary chaincases, and delivers the convenience of one lubricant for all three sumps. Check your owner’s manual for what it allows in each compartment.

Black or chrome filter: is there any difference?

In AMSOIL’s listings the black and chrome kits match in oil, quart count, and O-ring; the difference is the filter finish, EaOM134 (black) or EaOM134C (chrome). AMSOIL lists the GA251 filter wrench for both.

Are AMSOIL PK1 and PK2 Harley kits?

No. PK1 and PK2 are AMSOIL’s ATV/UTV oil change kits for Polaris machines. The Harley-Davidson kits are the V-Twin kits: 4 quarts with a black or chrome filter, and 5 quarts with a black or chrome filter.

Why not buy an AMSOIL Harley kit on Amazon?

AMSOIL Dealers may not sell AMSOIL on marketplace sites like Amazon or eBay, so you can’t know where a marketplace listing came from. AMSOIL’s Limited Warranty does not cover lubricants that were not sold by AMSOIL or an authorized AMSOIL Dealer. Buy on AMSOIL.com or from a Dealer.

Will AMSOIL void my Harley-Davidson warranty?

AMSOIL’s FAQ says using AMSOIL has no effect on vehicle warranties, and AMSOIL’s summary of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is that a manufacturer can’t deny coverage without showing the lubricant caused the failure. Use the viscosity your manual calls for and keep your receipts. More in Will AMSOIL void my warranty?.
