Why AMSOIL / Warranty

Will AMSOIL void your vehicle warranty?

No. AMSOIL’s own FAQ says using AMSOIL synthetic motor oil has no effect on vehicle warranties. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act keeps a manufacturer from tying warranty coverage to a brand of oil unless it supplies that oil free, and AMSOIL notes a manufacturer can’t deny coverage without showing the oil caused the failure.

This page summarizes what AMSOIL publishes about warranties. It is not legal advice. For a specific dispute, talk to the manufacturer, AMSOIL Technical Services, or a lawyer.

What does the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act say?

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a 1975 federal law. AMSOIL’s guarantee page sums up what it means for oil this way:

  • It is illegal to tie warranty coverage to whichever brand of parts or lubricants you use. Manufacturers that do so must provide the parts or lubricants free of charge.
  • You have the freedom to choose how you protect your vehicles and equipment, including products formulated for extended drain intervals.
  • Manufacturers can’t deny warranty coverage without showing the aftermarket part or lubricant caused a failure.

AMSOIL also points people who are told otherwise to the Federal Trade Commission. Its guarantee page specifically mentions motorcycle, UTV, and snowmobile dealerships pressuring owners to buy the manufacturer’s brand of oil to keep their warranty.

What does Warranty Secure® mean?

Warranty Secure® is AMSOIL’s way of saying its products keep your factory warranty intact. AMSOIL describes its products as high-performance replacements for vehicle and equipment manufacturer-branded products.

Do I still have to match my owner’s manual?

Yes, and this is the part that matters. Run the viscosity and specification your owner’s manual calls for, and follow its maintenance schedule. AMSOIL’s own Limited Warranty does not cover equipment failure when AMSOIL lubricants are not used in strict accordance with the written recommendations of AMSOIL or the manufacturer. The AMSOIL vehicle lookup lists the right product for your vehicle.

Can I run extended drain intervals during the factory warranty?

AMSOIL’s FAQ says extending oil change intervals will not void new vehicle warranties: to affect the warranty, it must be determined that the lubricant was directly responsible for the failure. AMSOIL’s intervals depend on the oil and how you drive. See choose your drain interval and the 25,000-mile oil change. Whatever interval you run, keep the receipts and a log.

What does AMSOIL’s own Limited Warranty cover?

AMSOIL warrants that its lubricants are free of defective materials, design, and workmanship and are fit for use according to AMSOIL’s written recommendations. If an AMSOIL lubricant is defective, AMSOIL will replace the lubricant and, at its option and cost, repair or replace components damaged by the defective lubricant. AMSOIL says it does not restrict that coverage based on total vehicle miles.

The Limited Warranty does not cover, among other things:

  • AMSOIL lubricants not packaged by AMSOIL or an authorized AMSOIL packager and sold by AMSOIL or an authorized AMSOIL Dealer.
  • Use with another product or additive AMSOIL has not authorized, or contamination after the oil leaves AMSOIL.
  • Mechanically deficient equipment, normal wear, or not following the manufacturer’s recommendations before AMSOIL was installed.
  • Racing and manned aircraft use, or a claim where a reasonable oil sample was not kept.

How does an AMSOIL warranty claim work?

  1. Take a six-ounce representative oil sample from the failed equipment, in a clean, dry container.
  2. If the vehicle is under factory warranty, file the claim with the manufacturer first. If they deny it because of AMSOIL, get the denial in writing.
  3. Notify AMSOIL Technical Services at (715) 399-8324 and email the claim notice and denial to tech@amsoil.com within 30 days of the failure.
  4. Keep the failed parts for inspection unless the manufacturer has them.
  5. Mail AMSOIL the sample, the make, model, and year, miles or hours, maintenance history, and proof of purchase and batch number if you have them. AMSOIL reimburses that mailing cost if the claim is approved.

That is AMSOIL’s Limited Warranty process as published (revised April 2025). Check the current version on AMSOIL.com before you file.

Alaska notes: cold starts, idling, and severe service

Up here a lot of normal driving counts as severe service. AMSOIL defines severe service for gasoline engines as commercial or fleet use, excessive idling, or frequent towing, hauling, plowing, or dusty driving. For diesels it is extensive idling, daily trips under 10 miles, or frequent dusty driving. Remote-start warm-ups and a plow on the front of the truck put a lot of Mat-Su vehicles in that column. If that is you, use AMSOIL’s severe-service interval or your manufacturer’s, whichever applies, and write it down.

Sleds: AMSOIL also has a separate Runs on Freedom® Snowmobile Warranty for INTERCEPTOR® Synthetic 2-Stroke Oil. AMSOIL says it will pay for engine repairs in the unlikely event of engine problems for up to 24 months or 5,000 miles (8,000 km). Terms are on AMSOIL’s guarantee page; sled oil is on the snowmobile page.

Kits and machines people ask about

The same rules apply to powersports. If you are changing your own oil to keep a Polaris or Can-Am on schedule, the Polaris kit fitment and Can-Am kit fitment pages show which AMSOIL kit fits. Harley owners: see AMSOIL for Harley-Davidson. For the bigger picture, see why AMSOIL.

AMSOIL and warranties, answered

Can a dealership deny my warranty claim because I used AMSOIL?

Not for the brand alone. AMSOIL’s summary of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is that a manufacturer can’t deny warranty coverage without showing the aftermarket lubricant caused the failure. If a claim is denied and the denial is based on AMSOIL, get the denial in writing; AMSOIL’s claim process asks for it.

Do I need to keep receipts for oil changes?

Keep them. Receipts and a simple log with date, mileage or hours, and the oil and filter used are what show you followed the maintenance schedule. AMSOIL’s own claim process asks for maintenance history and proof of purchase if available.

Does mixing AMSOIL with other oils void anything?

It affects AMSOIL’s warranty, not your vehicle’s. AMSOIL says mixing other oils with AMSOIL motor oils shortens the oil’s life, that AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed, and that mixing will void the AMSOIL limited warranty.

Does AMSOIL pay if my engine fails?

Only for a covered defect. If an AMSOIL lubricant is defective in materials, design, or workmanship, AMSOIL’s Limited Warranty says AMSOIL will replace the lubricant and, at its option and cost, repair or replace components damaged by the defective lubricant. Exclusions include normal wear, mechanically deficient equipment, unauthorized additives, contamination, racing, and products not sold by AMSOIL or an authorized AMSOIL Dealer.

Can I use AMSOIL during break-in on a new vehicle?

AMSOIL’s FAQ says yes: AMSOIL synthetic motor oils can be safely used during break-in. Match the viscosity and specification in your owner’s manual.

Will extended oil change intervals void my new-vehicle warranty?

AMSOIL’s FAQ says no: to affect the vehicle warranty, it must be determined that the lubricant was directly responsible for the failure. Keep records, and use AMSOIL’s severe-service interval if your driving fits AMSOIL’s severe-service definition.
