What’s in each kit?

Every Polaris kit is one box with AMSOIL 5W-50 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil (2.5 quarts in PK1, 2 quarts in PK2 and PK3, 3 quarts in PK4), one oil filter, and one drain-plug washer. AMSOIL says the filter uses cellulose media and meets or exceeds Polaris OEM filter standards. Pick the kit on the product page and it lists that kit’s contents.

PK1 vs PK2 vs PK3 vs PK4: what’s the difference?

Mostly fitment. All four use the same oil, AMSOIL 5W-50 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil. What changes is which machines the kit is listed for and how much oil is in the box: 2.5 quarts in PK1, 2 quarts in PK2 and PK3, and 3 quarts in PK4. PK1 is the 900 and 1000 side-by-side kit. PK2 is the Sportsman, Scrambler, and older-ATV kit, plus the RANGER 400 and 2016-and-earlier RANGER 500. PK3 is the mid-size kit. PK4 exists because PK1 does not fit turbo models: it is the RZR 1000 Turbo kit.

Running a Can-Am too? AMSOIL makes a separate set of kits for those: see AMSOIL Can-Am oil change kits.

Does the kit cover the transmission and front drive?

No. A kit is an engine-oil change: oil, filter, and washer. Polaris transmissions, gearcases, and front drives take their own fluids, and the right one depends on the model and year. AMSOIL’s UTV lookup and ATV lookup list them, and the ATV & UTV oil page covers the rest of the AMSOIL ATV line.

Running a Polaris through an Alaska winter

Around the Mat-Su, a RANGER or GENERAL is a work machine: plowing the driveway, hauling firewood, pulling a sled trailer to the trailhead. That is hard on oil in a way the odometer does not show. Short plow runs that never fully warm the engine let moisture and fuel collect in the oil. A few habits from years of doing this up here:

  • If your owner’s manual has a severe-use interval, plowing and short cold runs are what it is for. Use it.
  • Do the fall change before the machine sits, so it stores on clean oil instead of last season’s.
  • Keep the kit somewhere heated. AMSOIL recommends storing lubricants at least 10°F above their pour point, and oil pours better warm anyway.
  • Check the level the way your manual describes. Some Polaris engines have a specific warm-up and check procedure.

AMSOIL describes the oil in these kits as an all-season formula that performs in extreme heat and cold, with protection for demanding chores and tough terrain, and rust and corrosion protection for machines that sit.

How to change the oil with a kit

  1. Run the engine a few minutes to warm the oil, then shut it off on level ground.
  2. Pull the drain plug and let it drain. Install the new drain-plug washer from the kit.
  3. Remove the old filter, wipe the base clean, film the new filter’s gasket with fresh oil, and install it as your manual specifies.
  4. Fill with the oil from the kit, start the engine briefly, shut it off, and check the level the way your manual describes.
  5. Check the plug and filter for leaks, and take the used oil and filter to a recycler.

Torque values and the exact procedure are in your owner’s or service manual. Follow those over any general list, including this one.

Polaris kits, answered

Does AMSOIL PK1 fit a RZR turbo?

No. AMSOIL lists PK1 as not fitting turbo models. AMSOIL’s kit for the RZR 1000 Turbo is PK4. For any other turbo model, check the machine on AMSOIL’s UTV lookup.

What is the difference between PK1 and PK2?

Fitment. PK1 fits the Polaris 900 and 1000 side-by-sides: ACE 900, GENERAL 1000, and 2013-and-newer RANGER and RZR 900 and 1000. PK2 fits the Sportsman, Scrambler, and other Polaris ATVs, plus the RANGER 400 and 2016-and-earlier RANGER 500. PK1 has 2.5 quarts of oil and PK2 has 2 quarts. Both use AMSOIL 5W-50 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil with a filter and a drain-plug washer.

What oil comes in the AMSOIL Polaris kits?

AMSOIL 5W-50 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil, plus one oil filter and one drain-plug washer. PK1 has 2.5 quarts, PK2 and PK3 have 2 quarts each, and PK4 (RZR 1000 Turbo) has 3 quarts.

Can I run a different oil in my Polaris in winter?

Go by your owner’s manual and AMSOIL’s lookup for your machine and year. The kits are built with 5W-50 for the models listed. If your manual calls for a different grade at your temperatures, follow the manual and buy the oil and filter separately.

Will AMSOIL void my Polaris warranty?

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer can’t tie warranty coverage to a brand of oil, and AMSOIL notes a manufacturer can’t deny coverage without showing the oil caused a failure. Use the grade your manual calls for and keep your receipts. More in Will AMSOIL void my warranty?.

Is there an AMSOIL kit for my Polaris snowmobile?

Not in this line. The PK kits are ATV/UTV kits. For a Polaris sled, see snowmobile oil or AMSOIL’s snowmobile lookup.
