What’s in the Can-Am kits?
Each kit is one box: AMSOIL 5W-40 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil, one oil filter, and the O-ring and washers for the job. AMSOIL says the filter uses cellulose media and meets or exceeds Can-Am standards, and that the oil flows quickly in the cold for quick starts and is wet-clutch compatible.

CK4 vs CK5 vs CK6: what’s the difference?
Fitment and fill. All three use AMSOIL 5W-40 Synthetic ATV/UTV Motor Oil. CK4 is the Maverick X3 and newer Maverick Turbo kit and holds the most oil. CK5 is the broad one: most Outlander, Renegade, Commander, and Maverick models, plus the Defender and Traxter HD8 and HD10. CK6 is for the smaller Defender and Traxter HD5 and the Outlander 400 and 450.
Polaris in the shed too? Those take the PK kits: see AMSOIL Polaris oil change kits.
Does the kit cover the gearbox and front differential?
No. The kit is an engine-oil change. Can-Am gearboxes, front differentials, and rear drives take their own fluids, and the right one depends on the machine. AMSOIL’s UTV lookup and ATV lookup list them by model and year, and the ATV & UTV oil page covers the rest of the AMSOIL ATV line.
Can-Am machines in an Alaska winter
A Defender with a blade or an Outlander pulling a freight sled works harder in a Mat-Su winter than it ever does in July. Short, cold runs are the hard part: the engine never gets hot enough to cook off moisture and fuel. What I tell folks:
- Plowing and short cold trips are what the severe-use schedule in your owner’s manual is for, if it has one.
- Change the oil before the machine is parked for a season, not after.
- Store the kit in a heated space. AMSOIL recommends storing lubricants at least 10°F above their pour point.
- Check the level exactly the way your manual describes for your engine.
Change it the same way as any kit: warm the engine, drain, replace the O-ring and washers from the box, swap the filter, fill, and check the level. Torque values and the procedure are in your owner’s or service manual.

Can I use an AMSOIL Polaris kit on a Can-Am?
No. The PK kits are listed only for Polaris models and come with 5W-50. Use the CK kit AMSOIL lists for your Can-Am, or the lookup if your machine is not listed. The Polaris list is on AMSOIL Polaris oil change kits.
Will AMSOIL void my Can-Am warranty?
No. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act keeps a manufacturer from tying warranty coverage to a brand of oil, and AMSOIL notes a manufacturer can’t deny coverage without showing the oil caused a failure. Use the grade your manual calls for and keep your receipts. More in Will AMSOIL void my warranty?.
